Dr. Anil Kakodkar is one of India’s most distinguished nuclear scientists, engineers, educationists, and institution builders. Internationally acclaimed for his pioneering contributions to nuclear science and technology, he has played a transformative role in making India’s atomic energy programme technologically self-reliant. Through his visionary leadership, scientific excellence, and unwavering commitment to indigenous research and innovation, he has significantly strengthened India’s capabilities in nuclear power generation, reactor technology, strategic research, and national energy security. His contributions have not only elevated India’s standing in the global scientific community but have also laid a strong foundation for the country’s long-term technological advancement.
Born in 1943 at Barwani, Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Kakodkar completed his early education in Khargone before moving to Mumbai for higher studies. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), University of Mumbai, in 1963 and joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) the same year through its prestigious Training School. He later earned a Master’s degree in Experimental Stress Analysis from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, in 1969. His academic excellence, technical expertise, perseverance, and exceptional leadership qualities established him as one of India’s leading scientific minds.
Over a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Kakodkar has made landmark contributions to India’s nuclear programme. He played a pivotal role in the design and construction of the Dhruva Research Reactor, the rehabilitation and modernization of India’s Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), the indigenous development of advanced reactor technologies, and the conceptualization and development of the Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR) based on thorium utilisation. He also contributed significantly to India’s strategic nuclear capabilities, helping strengthen the nation’s technological independence in the field of atomic energy.
Dr. Kakodkar served as Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (1996–2000), Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy (2000–2009). During his tenure, he expanded India’s nuclear research infrastructure, established several advanced research institutions, and strengthened collaborations between scientific research, higher education, and industry. Even after completing his tenure in government, he continued to serve the nation as DAE Homi Bhabha Chair Professor, INAE Satish Dhawan Chair of Engineering Eminence, and as a member or chairman of numerous national committees related to science, technology, energy, education, and sustainable development.
Beyond nuclear science, Dr. Kakodkar has consistently advocated the use of science and technology for inclusive national development. He introduced and promoted the concept of “CILLAGE” (City + Village), envisioning the integration of knowledge, technology, and innovation to bridge the urban-rural divide and create sustainable models of rural development. He has served as Chairman of the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, chaired several Government of India advisory committees, and has contributed significantly to national policies in science, education, energy, and innovation. He has also been associated with several premier academic and research institutions as Chairman, Trustee, Fellow, or Member of their governing bodies.
An accomplished researcher and academic, Dr. Kakodkar has authored more than 250 scientific papers and technical publications and has been honoured with honorary doctorates by several prestigious universities and institutions in India and abroad. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, India, the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, and several other distinguished professional bodies.
Dr. Kakodkar’s extraordinary contributions have earned him numerous national and international honours. The Government of India has conferred upon him the Padma Shri (1998), Padma Bhushan (1999), and Padma Vibhushan (2009). He has also received the Maharashtra Bhushan, Gomant Vibhushan, Madhya Pradesh Gaurav, the Homi Bhabha Lifetime Achievement Award, the Rockwell Medal for Excellence in Technology, the Officer of the Legion of Honour from the Government of France, and many other prestigious awards in recognition of his outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology, and national development.
